To update your hosts file on Mac OSX 10.4.x without restart follow the steps below.
Update Steps
- From the main tool bar click Go > Go to Folder..
- Type /etc
- Copy the hosts file to your desktop
- Create a copy of the hosts file and store it locally for backup (ex. hosts-jan-1-2007)
- Right click or open with TextEdit
- Add new line with IP address then tab then the desired domain name
- Close and save file
- Copy the file from your desktop back to the open /etc window
- From the alert window choose Authenticate
- Next on the Copy alert window Replace
- From the authentication window enter the administrator password
- To have your local machine recognize the change, open the Terminal application from Applications > Utilities
- At the prompt type sudo killall -HUP lookupd (quick note: as the admin is kills the host lookup thread)
- Wait about 5 seconds and try, the process will be restarted automatically picking up the new host file and changes
Required
Notes
- This will override any external DNS entries - so be sure to remove should the location change to an external server/box
- Unless the process is killed, the changes will not take affect until the server/client is restarted
