To update your hosts file on Mac OSX 10.4.x without restart follow the steps below.

Update Steps
  • From the main tool bar click Go > Go to Folder..
  • Type /etc
  • Copy the hosts file to your desktop
  • Create a copy of the hosts file and store it locally for backup (ex. hosts-jan-1-2007)
  • Right click or open with TextEdit
  • Add new line with IP address then tab then the desired domain name
  • Close and save file
  • Copy the file from your desktop back to the open /etc window
  • From the alert window choose Authenticate
  • Next on the Copy alert window Replace
  • From the authentication window enter the administrator password
  • To have your local machine recognize the change, open the Terminal application from Applications > Utilities
  • At the prompt type sudo killall -HUP lookupd (quick note: as the admin is kills the host lookup thread)
  • Wait about 5 seconds and try, the process will be restarted automatically picking up the new host file and changes


Required
  • Administrator access


Notes
  • This will override any external DNS entries - so be sure to remove should the location change to an external server/box
  • Unless the process is killed, the changes will not take affect until the server/client is restarted
